Near the entrance there is a lobby with lockers or cubicles. You collect slippers (terlik) and thin cloth (peştemal) to wrap around your body, change and lock your valubles away. If you feel more comfortable, you can keep your underwear on (best to take a spares with you).
You will pass through a cooler room where the toilets and showers are located, then into the main room with a marble slab (göbektaşı), and in the same room or in rooms to the side you will find marble basins (kurna) with small bowls (tası).
The idea is to put some warm/hot water into the marble basin, then with the small bowl scoop it and pour it over your body. The water in the basin should be kept completely clean at all times. After pouring water over your body, use soap as required, then pour more water over you to rinse off while taking care not to let any soap touch the water in the basin.
Then pour some water onto the hot marble slab, which should be wet before laying down on it for about 20 minutes to loosen up your body and open your pores in preparation for the scrub and massage. There may also be a steam room (sauna).
The standard massage is the soap massage, where soapy foam is squeezed over your body from an air and soap filled pillowcase. There may also be an oil massage.
After the massage you may relax further in the hot room before returning to the lobby, where it is common to sit around and chat as you cool down before drying and changing. For this reason drinks including Turkish or apple tea are sold in the lobby, where you can buy herbal soaps and so on, too.
Private facilities are available for individuals and couples at certain spa facilities.
There is more focus on the massage in such facilities.
Many different types of massage may be on offer including:
Full body aromatherapy, full body Balinese massage, full body Swedish massage, full body anti stress massage, oil massage, soap massage (traditional Turkish hamam style), foot massage, face clay mask and face massage.
Times vary but usually between 2pm and 9pm, and must be booked in advance.
